SHORT FILM, ‘CERCIE IN NEW YORK’ WRITTEN BY LOCAL SCREENWRITER PREVIEWS AT COOLIDGE CORNER CINEMA ON JANUARY 25TH, 2006.
January 2, 2007 –“Cercie in New York” previews Thursday, January 25th,, 2007 at the Coolidge Corner screening room located at 290 Harvard Street, Brookline from 7:30pm through 9:30pm. There will be showings of the film every half hour starting at 7:45pm. This dramatic short film is the creation of Jeana Hackman Grady, an award winning local writer living in Brighton. “Cercie in New York” is a scene adapted from one of her feature films, “Where the Hell is Monkey town?” This emotionally charged moment in the life of two dysfunctional characters tells their intimate story during a chance meeting, which rekindles their past.
Cercie, a woman of the night, left Max and their newborn at the hospital some twenty years ago- desperate for freedom. At the time, Max was an in-demand studio Jazz musician who, due to the abandonment, ended up giving up his career to raise his son. The scene details what was supposed to be just another ‘trick’ turns out to be more than they both bargained for. Come meet the cast and crew, which includes prominent Boston born Director, J.P. Ouellette, Producer Arnon Shorr of OxRock Productions, and local actors Doreen Lang and Thomas Benton and screenwriter, Jeana Grady. In addition to the aforementioned, additional members who helped bring the film to life were cinematographer Iga Mikler and soundman Trey Hamilton. Wine and cheese will compliment this short, but intensely riveting film.
This short story is just one of Jeana’s scripts that has been made into a film. “Cercie in New York” is currently being submitted to various film festivals throughout the country. Jeana has written three feature films to date, and is currently working on her fourth feature. All three of her feature scripts have won or placed well in several festivals including Women in Film New England, WinFemme LA, Austin Film Festival, Moondance, among others. One of her previous comedy scripts, “Blocked,” is about a novelist who encounters her character’s resistance when she stops writing. “Syncopation” is a dramatic script about a free-spirited musician who befriends a girl, self-imprisoned in an abusive relationship, and struggles to balance his obsession with music with his growing feelings for her. Her latest dark comedy, “Where the Hell is Monkeytown?,” follows the life of loner, Max, as he finds love in all the wrong places.
Ms. Grady comments that “Cercie in New York” is one of her strongest works so far and translated well to screen. J.P. Ouellette, who has directed and produced films on both coasts, remarked that this story “is edgy but real.”
Ms Grady has been writing since her grammar school years. Initially exploring the realm of poetry and short story, she quickly became interested in writing plays. As an adult, her attention was drawn to screenwriting. The website for this film is: www.cercieinnewyork.com.
